I’m not saying that I’m getting older and out of touch, mind you, but when Mrs. Nat’s TV and I pulled up the listing for last night’s Saturday Night Live and saw the guest host (“Dane Cook”) and the musical guest (“James Blunt”), we realized that we had no idea who either of these gentlemen were. We’d never, to the best of our knowledge, heard the names before.
Secretly famous?

Well, I’m paddlin’ in the same obliviously aging boat then—never heard of’em.
They must be big, though. After all, it’s not every 2-bit 15-minute celeb who gets his own website! Only real stars get their own space on the http://www...
Dane Cook
James Blunt
…Right?
I can no longer count the times when the late night talk show hosts announce who their guests are and what big stars they are and my reaction is one of head scratching. Often, once I see the guest and his/her/their act the head scratching becomes even more vigorous.
I had a long email exchange with a younger friend (he’s 35, I’m 49) about this same topic. He assured me that this guy is the hottest stand up comic around, although he did admit that stand ups aren’t exactly the hippest thing these days. He also opined that casting him was a desperate attempt by SNL to regain some lost credibility among younger viewers who no longer consider the show hip and happening.
My final comment was that I suspected that this guy might be the latest stand up to receive his own sitcom and that was the only conceivable reason for his hosting.
Having now seen the episode, I cannot say that my ignorance of this performer was any great loss.
Agreed, if that monologue was at all indicative of his work, I will remain blissfully ignorant regarding him. In the skits he was in he could have been any one of the unknown featured players whose names I will never remember.
The music guy was inoffensive, but I almost always speed through those when watching the tape on Sunday morning.
