SNL appears pretty much the same way on Comcast’s On Demand — with minutes missing and never any musical numbers. I gave up on that version long ago. News sites usually link to the best sketches on Hulu the next day anyway.

I didn’t say Coulton was guilty of plagiarism; I indicated he had “reused [Mix-A-Lot's] material without proper concern for his ethical (rather than legal) rights and recognition of his contribution, a strong lack of respect”, Had he asked Mix-A-Lot if it was okay for him to rework the song, that would’ve been a different matter.

Seriously? Jonathan Coulton as guilty of plagiarism as FOX?

Coulton credited Sir Mix-a-Lot. FOX is, for some reason, *refusing* to credit Coulton.

In addition, Coulton wrote his own arrangement. FOX didn’t use Coulton’s arrangement as inspiration for theirs, they just used his arrangement, period: http://t.co/S0MH1I1W

To paraphrase Samuel L. Jackson, it ain’t the same ballpark; it’s not even the same damn sport.

[...] He removed the artist’s name from the work, taking out a reference to Mix-A-Lot and replacing it with a representation of his own name (“Johnny C.”) It’s hard to say that he was showing any respect to the musician whose work he was covering." When he released the song (I searched his blog by tying "Baby's Got Back" quotes and all and going to the earliest post) Coulton mentioned the original author of the song and included an i-tunes link to the album it appears on so that people could buy the original artist's work if they wanted. Also with respect to coming up for a new arrangement of the song and changing the lyrics you could argue that Johnny Cash wasn't respecting Trent Reznor's "Hurt" but Reznor loved it. And really, whether reworking the song is respectful is a moot point here. Glee is exploiting a nasty part of the copyright law to parasite off of some-else's creativity.

I taped this episode which was in syndication at that point back in September 1995 and it had the original “On Broadway” and “Monkey Man” songs in it, so I am not sure how long these contracts last. It’s a shame because I have since lost that tape and wanted a copy of this episode with the original music, now it seems forever lost.

THANKS VERY MUCH for posting all that information about your Mother. Carol and I are very saddened by her passing, and some of the circumstances as well. We hope that you and your sister & brothers will take comfort in all your Mother’s accomplishments. She was WAY AHEAD of her time.
