Sean, if you see this comment, I would be so grateful if you'd send her my love -- Kala Pierson, k at unfurl dot org. She played in the premiere of my Rilke Songs and was a wonderful part of my experience at the Rock.

I'd love to hear from her and be able to send her pictures of my family. (If she prefers phone to email, I'd be equally happy to tell you my phone number if you email me -- and/or to send her physical mail if you tell me an address for her.) Thanks so much in advance.

The *opening* of that same episode also had the plot content carried quite strongly by the lyrics to On Broadway, and becomes meaningless garbage accompanied by elevator music. It's a terrible shame. I'd happily pay an extra fee to get the right songs in...

I have only the vaguest memories of those two episodes of Roxie (I have always been a big AM fan; saw her on Broadway as Aunt Eller in Oklahoma! a few years back). I must have been the only person watching. I do seem to recall that they were not nearly as funny as the K&A episodes, probably having been rewritten and otherwise massaged (the cast changes I'm sure) at the behest of the network into yet another bland workplace sitcom.

Ach! I did not know that - and it's the sort of thing I really should know. Now I really want to see those two episodes (and would not be surprised if there were four more sitting in the can, never aired.) Thank you for the very informative comment.

(Caught the lovely Teresa Ganzel's name as one of those providing extra voices on Toy Story 3... and she wasn't the only person of note in that li'l group.)

If ABC were to run that show, it would be 23 years after CBS broadcast "Roxie", which aired for two whole episodes in April 1987 (the Kate & Allie episodes were from December 1986). Between the backdoor pilot and the actual series, the concept changed to a local UHF station and featured, in addition to Andrea Martin, Teresa Ganzel, Mitchell Laurance, Ernie Sabella and Jack Riley (!).

Not disagreeing about your bigger point that it would probably still be a watchable show today with that original pilot's cast.

Wow. I found this post by googling "Hilda Banks Shapiro" and had a moment similar to the one you had -- very happy to hear about her life and career extending forward so well.

I'm a composer and she was part of an early performance of one of my pieces, when I was 16.

Unfortunately the article you link to is on a blog that, at least currently, is "for invited readers only." But I'll go look for other info about her. Thanks for this post.

edited because apparently I don’t know how to spell “Tucson”.

Alas, also "one-liners" or "dinner". I chalk it up to haste and spell-checkers that can't read minds.
