I went into the pilot of the new Melrose Place a practical blank, never having watched an episode of Melrose Place Classic. It turns out, to little surprise, that it’s abot a bunch of sexy twenty-somethings with complications who all live in the same courtyard building.
Everything is slick, sudden, and most of the characters act stupid because stupid seems to be key to hte plot. While there are some storylines set up that might be legitimate drama food, the occurrence of a murder in the first episode makes it clear that this is pure soap opera. The imapct of the murder is all intrigue, not at all emotional. A couple of the characters are likable or at least easy on the eyes, but this does not leave me feeling like I missed anything by skipping the original series (which I suspect that this has ties to — at least it seems like a couple characters are meant to have that history), nor shall I miss anything skipping this one.
